Balham Food & Wine is a local convenience and off-licence shop at 56 Balham High Road, London SW12 9AQ. The owner needed a reliable CCTV system to protect stock, staff and customers, and a way to check on the shop from home.
The brief
- Clear coverage of the entrance, tills and main aisles
- Footage good enough to identify faces and details if an incident happens
- Live and recorded viewing from the owner’s phone

What I installed
- 16 Channel 4K / 5MP IP cameras positioned to cover the entrance, counter and shop floor
- Recorder, 16-channel NVR with 8TB, giving roughly 45 days of continuous recording
- Neat, secured cabling throughout the shop
- Remote viewing set up on the owner’s phone, with motion alerts / other features
Keeping it legal
Shop CCTV records customers, so it has to follow UK data protection rules. I set up clear signs telling people CCTV is in use, and pointed cameras at the shop itself rather than the pavement beyond it. I also walked the owner through how long footage is kept and how to handle a request for it.
The result
